Mikel Arteta insists Bayern Munich should not have been awarded a penalty against Arsenal
Mikel Arteta has dismissed Bayern Munich’s claims for a penalty in their 2-2 draw with Arsenal in the Champions League on Tuesday.
Thomas Tuchel was furious with Swedish referee Glenn Nyberg after he refused to give a penalty against Arsenal when Gabriel Magalhaes picked up a pass from David Raya with his hands, despite the whistle being blown to restart play.
Tuchel revealed after the match that Nyberg had described Gabriel’s error as a ‘kid’s mistake’ and refused to punish the Brazilian defender for the mix-up with Raya.
‘What makes us really angry is the explanation on the field. He [the referee] told our players that it’s a kid’s mistake and he will not give a penalty like this in a quarter final,’ Tuchel said.
‘This is a horrible, horrible explanation because that means he’s judging our handballs. Kid’s mistake, adult’s mistake, or whatever.’
But Arteta insists that the Swedish official made the right call as Arsenal did not gain an advantage from the situation.
‘Yeah, I did notice it, especially after where there was a certain reaction from them,’ Arteta said.

‘I think the referees used the law and the law says to use common sense and whether you take an advantage from that situation which there isn’t any advantage.’
Asked if he will speak to Raya and Gabriel about the incident, Arteta said: ‘Just to clarify I think it is worth doing it, so next time just in case don’t do it again.’
