Emmanuel Petit slams Todd Boehly over ‘crazy’ Chelsea transfer plans

Emmanuel Petit has slammed Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly amid reports the club may offload Connor Gallagher, suggesting a sale would be ‘crazy’.

Chelsea need to generate over £100 million in player sales in order to avoid a Financial Fair Play (FFP) penalty and Gallagher could be sacrificed given his status as an academy graduate as he would be pure profit on the balance sheet.

That would be wildly unpopular with many Blues supporters given Gallagher has been one of their best players this term in an otherwise dissapointing season, conjuring up five goal involvements in his last seven Premier League games.

It was reported in February that Boehly is ‘not convinced’ by Gallagher and Tottenham are hoping to poach the England international in the summer transfer window, looking to take advantage of the fact that he’s out of contract in 2025.

‘Chelsea selling Gallagher? If anything summed up the board of Chelsea, it is this,’ former Blues star Petit told Genting Casino. ‘Can you believe that? They are running the club into the ground!

‘Boehly has signed so many players that he may have to get rid of Gallagher, one of their most important players.

‘He’s one of the only leaders, too, so it really is crazy to be a Chelsea fan right now. I’m happy I wasn’t around in the Boehly era.’

Chelsea fans are furious over reports Gallagher could be sold with @ShedEndTom1982 posting on X: ‘I’m not surprised by this from Muppet Boehly. He’s such a great judge of top PL Players isn’t he?’

‘Thousands of Chelsea fans are “not convinced” by Todd Boehly either,’ @KevinleachKevin added.

@Artileyin posed: ‘If it is true that @todd_boehly wants to sell Conor Gallagher, I am convinced these guys do not mean well for Chelsea. Typical of Americans. Chelsea supporters do not have owners who are passionate about bringing glory back to the club.’

American billionaire Boehly has been largely unpopular at Chelsea since BlueCo took control from Roman Abramovich in May 2022.

Chelsea have spent over £1 billion on players in the BlueCo era but they have massively struggled on the pitch.

Chelsea fans recently launched a campaign against their owners, depicting Boehly as a clown on mass-produced stickers with the words: ‘Get them out.’

Todd Boehly’s biggest gaffes

Todd Boehly allegedly wanted Chelsea to play an impossible 4-4-3 formation and was largely ridiculed by the football community for wanting to introduce an American-style All-Star game in England. His decision to sack head coach Thomas Tuchel in September 2022 was hugely unpopular as well as his transfer policy of handing huge, long contracts to young, unproven players.

Boehly travelled to Saudi Arabia earlier this year to raise funds for the club, looking for a new front-of-shirt sponsor for the 2024-25 season.

He is also hoping to sell a number of players to clubs in the Saudi Pro League, including forgotten striker Romelu Lukaku.
