A stunning night of quarter-final action in the Champions League saw Arsenal held 2-2 at home by Bayern Munich, while Manchester City and Real Madrid played out an incredible that ended 3-3.

Four of Europe’s best did not let anyone down as they produced entertainment from the off, with Manchester City taking the lead at the Santiago Bernabeu within two minutes.

That contest turned this way and that and was lit up by stunning goals from Phil Foden, Josko Gvardiol and Federico Valverde.

The Gunners also took the lead early through Bukayo Saka, then found themselves behind, with Harry Kane back in north London and finding the back of the net from the penalty spot.

Leandro Trossard saved the day from the bench, though, calmly slotting home an equaliser for Mikel Arteta’s men.

The two ties could not be more beautifully poised as Arsenal head to Munich and Real Madrid go to Manchester for the second legs.

City enjoyed the perfect start in Madrid as Bernardo Silva scored an unusual free-kick less than two minutes into the match, catching Andriy Lunin out at the near-post.

Aurelien Tchouameni had unwisely lunged in on Jack Grealish and the yellow card he received after a minute will keep him out of the second leg.

It was a disastrous opening for the home side but they quickly bounced back, with Eduardo Camavinga equalising and then and Rodrygo putting Real ahead just 14 minutes in.

Camavinga had a speculative shot from range which was fortunately deflected off Ruben Dias and past Stefan Ortega.

Rodrygo was then played in behind the City back four and again was fortunate as Manuel Akanji tracked back but unwittingly prodded the Brazilian’s shot away from his goalkeeper for another deflected goal.

There were chances for Real Madrid to extend their lead early in the second half with Jude Bellingham and Vinicius spurning them, before Phil Foden and then Josko Gvardiol scored screamers.

Foden moved the ball onto his left centrally just outside the penalty box on 66 minutes and then arrowed a shot into the top corner to level up.

That might have been the kind of thing you expect from Foden, but Gvardiol was a surprise owner of the next brilliant goal, cutting in from left-back and curling in a fantastic curled effort past Lunin for his first ever goal for the club.

The home side were not to be outdone in front of their own fans, though, and arguably the best goal was still to come as Federico Valverde hammered in an equaliser.

Vinicius stood up a cross from left to right of the penalty area for the onrushing Uruguayan who lashed a volley back across Ortega and into the far corner, which finished the scoring.

There was concern late on for Pep Guardiola as Foden limped off with an apparent calf problem, on a night on which Kevin De Bruyne didn’t feature after feeling unwell before kick-off.

At the Emirates Mikel Arteta’s side got off to a brilliant start as Bukayo Saka cut in from the right wing and bent a brilliant effort around Eric Dier and past Manuel Neuer to give the hosts the lead.

Arsenal’s defensive sturdiness has been a cornerstone in their Premier League title challenge this season but uncertainty from David Raya, who needlessly rushed off his line, and a loose pass from Gabriel Magalhaes, led to Bayern’s equaliser, which was finished from close range by Serge Gnabry.

The evening then got worse for Arsenal as a brilliant run from Leroy Sane was ended by a foul from William Saliba inside the Gunners’ box.

Harry Kane stepped up and waited for David Raya to make his move before he calmly rolled the ball into the net to put Bayern in front.

Arsenal were on the front foot for the majority of the second half but were made to wait until the 76th minute to get their equaliser.

Individual brilliance from Gabriel Jesus, whose quick footwork fooled Matthijs de Ligt and Leon Goretzka, created space for a pass to Trossard, who finished low past Neuer.

Arsenal were then denied a late penalty shout in injury time as Saka was clipped by Neuer inside Bayern’s box, however, Swedish referee Glenn Nyberg was unconvinced and waved play on.
