Arsenal legend Robert Pires says there is one player in Mikel Arteta’s squad that reminds him of himself, which is ‘educated’ star Gabriel Martinelli.
Pires, widely regarded as one of Arsenal’s greatest players, won two Premier League titles and two FA Cup trophies during his six-year spell at the club.
The Frenchman, who was mainly deployed as a winger, produced 85 goals and 61 assists across 284 appearances for the Gunners in all competitions.
Arsenal still have a huge place in Pires’ heart and the former Invincible sees a lot of similarities between himself and current star Martinelli.
‘Gabriel Martinelli looks like me,’ Pires told Media Carre. ‘He looks a lot like me because he’s a dribbler, he scores goals, and he is quick.
‘He makes good calls, he plays simply when it’s necessary to play simply, and he goes for the challenge when the challenge presents itself.
‘When he sees that he is one-on-one he plays for the team and that’s why I really like him. I know him a little bit, he’s educated, and he’s doing well at Arsenal, that’s for sure.’
