Grandad, 86, killed in e-bike crash as police arrest man, 18

The family of an 86-year-old grandad have paid tribute to him after he was killed by an e-bike.

Bart O’Hare died in hospital after being struck by an e-bike while walking on Accrington Road in Burnley.

His family have now paid loving tribute to the much-loved grandad, saying: ‘Bart was such a kind and loveable dad, brother and grandad who has been taken away from family and friends in such a tragic manner.

‘As a family we would like to thank all the emergency services involved for all their work. Bart you will be missed by so many, may you now rest in peace.’

Tributes have also flowed in on Facebook for the ‘true gentleman.’

Rosie Barraclough said: ‘The world has lost an amazing man. Bart was a huge part of my childhood, he was a true gentleman and always had time for all of us on the street. You will be missed by all.’

Rosegrove Unity Working Mans Club also shared condolensces: ‘The club, committee, staff and all members would like to send our sincere condolences to all Bart’s family on this sad occasion.’

Lancashire Police said: ‘An 18-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and failing to stop at the scene of an injury road traffic collision.

‘He has since been released on bail while our enquiries continue.’

Sgt. Paul McCurrie said of the incident: ‘First and foremost, our thoughts are with Bart’s family at this incredibly sad and distressing time.

‘The sur-ron e-bike didn’t remain at the scene following the incident, and we are yet to recover it.

‘So, we’re particularly interested in hearing from anyone who may have seen a dark-coloured Sur-ron e-bike similar to the one pictured, either being ridden or stored, that matches this description.’

Many locals have begun calling for a ban on e-bikes following the death of Mr. O’Hare.

Donna Wild said: ‘These bikes and the riders are a liability, up and down pulling wheelies, dodging in and out of traffic, having no consideration or respect for drivers or pedestrians, sadly resulting in serious accidents and loss of life.’

TJ Elliot added: ‘How many more accidents are gonna happen before the Burnley and Padiham Police and government finally do something about these reckless e-bikes?

‘Too many times I’ve seen near misses or e bikes crashing and damaging cars then riding off!’
