The hiker who found the remains of missing toddler Emile Soleil may have hurt the investigation after she picked up the boy’s skull.
The two-year-old’s body was discovered in the idyllic French Alpine hamlet Le Vernet by a hiker on Saturday.
But this area was scoured for clues with a ‘fine tooth comb’ when he first went missing in July.
It is also just over a mile from where the young boy was last seen.
There has been no trace of the toddler since he went missing eight months ago, with investigators trying to work out how long Emile’s remains had been at the site of discovery.
But it is feared the hiker may have removed key evidence after she reportedly moved the skull to hand it to military police.
One insider told Le Figaro newspaper: ‘It would have been much better if she hadn’t touched anything.’
Mayor François Balique said: ‘There are people who regularly use the path nearby. I used it last week. The volunteer searchers have been there, I’m sure.

‘The gendarmes couldn’t have missed him with the dogs. There was even logging there in autumn. The wood cutters didn’t see anything either. It’s incomprehensible.’
Resident Gilles Thézan said: ‘I say that the little one died and someone went to hide him there much later.
‘Now we have found little Emile, the police will be able to speed up their investigation.’

He sent an email to police in December saying Emile’s body was ‘located at, or in proximity to’ a field which was directly next to the site his remains were discovered.
He told The Sun: ‘It took me two days. I jumped on it immediately. I knew this is a serious case and the sense of urgency is high.’
The major developed his para-normal skills during his time as an operations and training officer at the CIA and Army Psychic Intelligence Unit.
Prosecutors have not yet given a cause of death, but forensic investigators were continuing to analyse the bones which were found.
