A child has been rescued after getting into difficulty in a tributary of the Thames.

The nine-year-old boy was spotted in the River Brent in Hanwell, west London, at around 3pm on Saturday.

Bystanders called police, who initially joined in with efforts to call out to the boy, who was up to his waist in the water.

But he did not respond, so one of the officers waded into the river and scooped him up.

The child was handed over to paramedics and was soon reunited with his family after they determined his physical condition was fine.

Sergeant Yusuf Hassaniyeh, who carried the boy out of the river, said: ‘When the call was circulated, there was no hesitation.

‘We knew that every second counted, and we were determined to reach the child before it was too late.’

Acting Chief Inspector of the Metropolitan Police, Jonathon Hubbard, said of the attending officers: ‘Their bravery exemplifies the finest qualities of the police service.’

‘We are immensely proud of their actions, which may well have saved a child’s life.’
