Chelsea head coach Mauricio Pochettino made journalists laugh in Friday’s press conference when asked about the club’s hefty financial losses.

It was recently announced that Chelsea had made a pre-tax loss of £90.1m which has put the west Londoners in some money trouble.

It is believed that Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly – who has spent over £1 billion on players since replacing Roman Abramovich in May 2022 – recently flew out to Saudi Arabia in an attempt to raise funds for the club.

The American is seeking a new shirt sponsor for the Blues and is looking to offload some players to the Saudi Pro League in the summer transfer window.

‘Last week, I asked you about the financial results, you said you were going to speak to the club about it,’ The Athletic’s Simon Johnson asked Chelsea boss Pochettino on Friday.

‘I didn’t speak!’ Pochettino abruptly said before the journalist could finish, which saw the room erupt into laughter as the reporter joked about asking a different question.

‘No, it’s true. I didn’t speak [to them]. We didn’t have time. That is why. We’ll see in the next few days or weeks. The club will inform you better than me.

Meanwhile, Pochettino has also provided an injury update on Chelsea defender Ben Chilwell after he was named in the England squad on Thursday.

‘Gareth [Southgate] told you he’s fit!’ Pochettino added. ‘Back to training. I think everything is going well. He will be in the squad for Sunday [against Leicester].’
