Chelsea star Cole Palmer has revealed he wouldn’t have dreamt about making England’s squad for Euro 2024 at the start of the season.

The midfielder has been a standout for the Blues in what has been an underwhelming first campaign under Mauricio Pochettino.

And his club form has made him a genuine contender to be included in Gareth Southgate’s 23-man squad for the tournament which gets underway in Germany on June 14.

‘If you had told me at the start of the season I had a chance to go to the Euros I wouldn’t have believed it,’ Palmer said.

‘I will take each game as it comes and see what happens in the summer.’

Palmer was speaking after helping guide Chelsea to a 3-2 win over Newcastle on Monday night, providing the assist for Nicolas Jackson’s opener before getting on the scoresheet himself to put Chelsea 2-1 up.

The 20 year-old’s contribution against the Magpies saw him nudge his goal tally up to 13, to go alongside his 11 assists for Chelsea this season.

Pochettino is delighted with the impact the £42.5m summer signing from Manchester City has had on the team, and was full of praise for the way Palmer has settled into his new life in west London.

‘He arrived the last day of the transfer window and it was so easy for him to adapt to the team and the demands from us, the coaching staff,’ Pochettino said after the Newcastle game.

‘He is showing his quality and, of course, it is good to have him in the squad. He is getting more mature every day.’

Southgate, who was at Stamford Bridge to watch Chelsea’s win, will name his squad for England’s upcoming friendly games on Thursday, with the Three Lions hosting Brazil on March 23 before returning to Wembley to face Belgium on March 26.

Palmer made his England debut in the Euro 2024 qualifier against Malta in November, with his second cap coming against North Macedonia three days later.
