Two women propped up a corpse in the passenger seat of a car while they withdrew money from the dead man’s bank account, US police allege.

Bea Feralo, 55 and Karen Casbohm, 63, then took the body to a hospital A&E and left him there with no explanation, they say.

This week prosecutors charged the pair with theft and gross abuse of a corpse.

According to police, Feralo and Casbohm had lived with the 80-year-old man, called Douglas Layman, in Ashtabula in Ohio, but were not related to him.

They say that, with the help of a third person, the women moved Layman’s corpse from their home and placed it in the passenger seat of his car, before driving to a nearby bank’s drive-thru window.

The bank had previously allowed the women to withdraw money from his account as long as he was with them, reports US news site The Smoking Gun.

When they turned up with his body on March 4, the cashier apparently didn’t realise Layman was actually dead and allowed the pair to withdraw $900 from his account.

Investigators allege that Feralo and Casbohm placed Layman ‘in the vehicle in such a manner that he would be visible to bank staff in order to make the withdrawal.’

The women the drove to Ashtabula County Medical Centre where they left Layman’s body ‘without providing any information about the man or themselves’, according to police.

Feralo and Casbohm say Layman died at home. His cause of death is still under investigation.

Court records state that Feralo has convictions for reckless assault, possession of drug paraphernalia, criminal trespass, driving under the influence, theft and attempted possession of drugs.

Casbohm has previous convictions for theft, soliciting, criminal trespass, receiving stolen property, possession of drug paraphernalia and attempted drug abuse.
