A grieving daughter has slammed a P&O cruises for selling her mum’s room just days after she died.
Florence Goldwater, 86, fell ill with bacterial pneumonia just two weeks into her round-the-world trip.
Her daughter, Rebecca Williams, said the family had to disembark the cruise so they could take her to hospital in Guatemala, but she sadly died days later.
The family decided to continue the 100-day trip after they saved £66,000 to pay for the two rooms on the ship.
But after they re-boarded the vessel in Hawaii on January 24, Rebecca was shocked to find her mum’s room had been sold on, and her belongings were dumped in the other cabin.
Rebecca said: ‘It’s all been so distressing. We’ve not heard anything back from P&O – we’ve emailed and emailed, and nothing.
‘When we’ve managed to speak to a general manager in person, he told us he was very sorry, but it’s company policy to sell on a room that isn’t being used.’
The family claim while Florence was in hospital, they were told buy a manager they were able to keep both rooms.
But after reboarding the general manager said, ‘someone else is in there now’.
A spokesperson for P&O Cruises said: ‘We are so sorry that Ms Williams’ mother died during the trip and our thoughts and prayers are with her and the family.
‘We follow very strict procedures in such cases to ensure that all personal effects and belongings are dealt with carefully and with the greatest respect. As such, they were moved for safekeeping to Ms Williams’ cabin.’
