Police in Hull and East Riding of Yorkshire have raided three funeral directors after getting a call concerning ‘concern for care of the deceased’.
The report, received by officers on Wednesday, raised alleged issues at three locations run by Legacy Independent Funeral Directors.
Detective Chief Superintendent Simon Gawthorpe of Humberside Police asked people to refrain from speculation about the incident, as ‘heartbroken and devastated families and loved ones’ will ‘potentially’ be involved.
The force has set up a helpline for people who used the company and who may be worried about how their dead relatives have been treated.
Cordons are currently in place at each of the three sites with officers also present.
According to its website, Legacy Independent Funeral Directors operates two sites in Hull and a third in the town of Beverley, north-west of the East Yorkshire city.
Described as a ‘family business’, it was founded in 2010 and is owned and run by Robert Bush.
The site says: ‘As an independent Funeral Director, we are able to create a unique farewell for loved ones, with more flexibility and less constraint than our competitors.’

Det Ch Supt Gawthorpe said: ‘Whilst we are in the very early stages of our investigation, I completely understand this information will be of concern to a number of families and individuals who have lost loved ones and have utilised the services of this business.
‘We have already been in contact with a number of people as part of our investigation and working closely with His Majesties Coroner, Hull City Council and East Riding Council to establish the facts.
‘I would encourage anyone to please call us, as we are very mindful of the distress this may cause.’
He added: ‘A direct telephone line has been established for anyone who is worried or wants to speak to us about Legacy Independent Funeral Directors.
