A home that crumbled into a raging Alaska river has gone on sale for $400,000 – despite being half collapsed.
The listing for the house at 409 Riverside Drive in Juneau looked normal in one shot.
But another photo showed the devastation that resulted from the Mendenhall River overflowing due to glacial flooding in August. A massive section of the home was fallen into a large hole bordering the river.
The listing caught the attention of a TikTok user who was baffled by its pricetag.
‘I’m just sitting looking at this house. I’m like, “How is it 1, only one bedroom and only one bathroom, and 2, if it’s just one bedroom, one bathroom, why do you want $400,000 from me?”‘ said the user, @sierrakatherinee.
‘The whole back of the mothaf***ing house is gone.
‘By this angle you would never know… it is gone, washed away.’
The home had four bedrooms and three bathrooms and was 3,300 square feet. But after breakage from a side basin of the Mendenhall Glacier caused the river to flood and eat away at some properties, the home was left with only 800 square feet.
The real estate agent managing the listing, Marty McKeown of Re/Max of Juneau, wrote that the home was on the market ‘as-is’ but was an ‘investment opportunity’.
‘Although this home is condemned,’ the listing states, ‘The apartment and garage remain standing in relatively good shape while the remaining collapsed home is in need of removal.’
