A toddler was killed after her dad accidentally reversed over her in his car outside their family home, an inquest has heard.

Haniyah Bint Vaqas Youni, was 19 months old when the incident happened in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire, on May 21 last year, Bradford Coroner’s Court heard.

She was playing in the garden then walked down a path, out of an unlocked gate, and onto the front drive.

Haniyah sat down in the rear blind spot of the BMW Three Series car and was killed 10 minutes later.

Residents including two doctors rushed to help resuscitate Haniyah after hearing a scream from her mum.

She was held in her mum’s arms as blood gushed from her nose before she was taken by paramedics to hospital.

CCTV footage provided to the court by neighbours was described as ‘extremely distressing’.

Haniyah could not be saved at the hospital because doctors found no signs of cardiac output despite trying CPR and using an incubation tube.

It was concluded that the car’s sensors would not have picked up Haniyah because she was so small.

The sensors on his car had a fault because of a previous minor crash.

Senior Coroner Martin Fleming said: ‘Haniyah was a lovely, vibrant, healthy little girl. The great tragedy here is that there was nothing to alert the father to her presence.’

Haniyah’s uncle, Shabir Younis, attended the hearing and was left in tears.

Mr Fleming asked him to pass on his condolences to Haniyah’s parents who were not in attendance at the hearing.

Haniyah’s cause of death was ruled as a traumatic head injury which the coroner said was an accident.
