A son who battered his mother to death tried to blamed her injuries on repeated falls because of her dementia.
Steffon Hewitt, 51, was convicted of murder yesterday after he left her witha traumatic brain injury as well as 28 rib fractures, six spinal fractures and severe bruising.
His mum Vanita Nowell, 68, had moved to the UK from Barbados in 2019 to come and live with him in Peckham, southeast London.
But only the next year she suffered a ‘painful death’ at his hands on March 8 2020, Isleworth Crown Court heard.
Hewitt dialled 999 and told the operator he had found his mother unresponsive on the bathroom floor, claiming she had broken ribs because he had attempted CPR.
She was already dead when the paramedics arrived, and according to medical experts the fractures could not have been caused from him performing this procedure.
Detective Constable Nick Stocking, part of the team that led the murder investigation, said: ‘Hewitt showed no remorse when killing his mother by inflicting significant and extensive injuries, resulting in what would have been a painful death.
‘Vanita suffered from 28 fresh rib fractures and six fractures of her spine, alongside extensive bruising to her face, head and body.
‘She also sustained a traumatic brain injury.
‘This was a vicious attack but Hewitt attempted to blame it on his mother’s constant falling due to her dementia.
‘A combination of forensic and medical evidence proved this was not true and it is right he will now face the consequences of his actions.’
Hewitt, of Blake’s Road, was remanded in custody ahead of sentence on April 16.
