Liverpool have stepped up their efforts to bring in Xabi Alonso as manager after making contact with his agent, according to reports in Germany.

The Reds are seeking a replacement for Jurgen Klopp, who will leave Anfield at the end of the season after nine years in the role and Alonso is their No.1 pick.

Alonso played for Liverpool between 2004 and 2009 and has impressed as head coach of Bayer Leverkusen, guiding them to the summit of the Bundesliga table.

The 42-year-old is also strongly linked to the Bayern Munich job with the German champions looking to find a successor for Thomas Tuchel ahead of next season.

It was rumoured Alonso had a clause in his Leverkusen contract which would allow him to join Liverpool but the club’s CEO has since denied those reports.

Despite that, Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher is hopeful Alonso will reject Bayern Munich to join the Reds.

According to German outlet Bild, Liverpool have now reached out to Alonso’s agent Inaki Ibanez as they look to secure him as the club’s next manager.
