Chilling new audio has revealed the rhythmic banging sound which gave hope that the Titan submersible victims could still be rescued alive.
The Titan lost contact with its mother ship while on an expedition to investigate the wreckage of the Titanic on June 18, 2023.
A frantic search was launched and the families of its passengers – Hamish Harding, 58, Shahzada Dawood, 48, Sulaiman Dawood, 19, Paul-Henry Nargeolet, 77, and OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush, 61 – were left waiting for updates.
Late into the second day of the search, noises were being detected in 30-minute intervals, deep under the ocean. The regular, steady beat caught the attention of experts and sparked hope that the banging could be SOS signals.
Played for the first time in a new documentary about the Titan sinking, the hollow sound was thought to potentially be ‘somebody knocking’, former Navy Submarine Captain Ryan Ramsey said.
‘The symmetry between those knockings is very unusual. It’s rhythmic, it’s like somebody is making that sound, and the fact that it is repeated is really unusual,’ he said.

The sound was first recorded at around 11.30pm on June 20, and the US Navy confirmed it had detected the noises the next morning.
Rescuers increased their efforts to find the missing sub before oxygen supplies were expected to run out.
But sadly the Pelagic search team’s submersible, Odysseus 6K, reached the seafloor after days of searching and found debris of the sub around 1,600 feet from the bow of the Titanic.
Titan had imploded and killed everyone on board as a result of enormous water pressure.
