Battle of Waterloo breaks out between rival football fans in huge station fight

It’s over 200 years since Napoleon was defeated and exiled, but it seems that some people wanted a rerun this weekend.

A minor ‘Battle of Waterloo’ broke out in London this weekend when rival football fans swarmed the concourse of the busy station and had to be held back by police.

Video shows how dozens of fans were jostling in front of the ticket machines, some trying to land punches on one another, while police in high vis jackets lined up to try and calm things down.

It shows how one man jumped over ticket barriers to get involved in the scrap, while others take on police – and some passengers try to mind their own business in the background.

The disorder broke out around 9pm on Saturday.

So many police appeared that they almost outnumbered the men trying to fight one another.

A British Transport Police spokesman said: ‘At around 9pm on February 24, British Transport Police officers on patrol at Waterloo railway station, alongside officers from the Metropolitan Police, responded to disorder between football fans.

‘The situation was de-escalated and no arrests were made.’

He added that the station’s operation was not disrupted with the situation not leading to train delays.
