Douglas Luiz was delighted to see Manchester United suffer a shock defeat to Fulham on Saturday as Aston Villa had a good weekend in the race for a Champions League spot.

Villa beat Nottingham Forest 4-2 on Saturday afternoon, with Luiz scoring twice and both Ollie Watkins and Leon Bailey finding the back of the net.

The win kept Unai Emery’s side fourth in the Premier League table and their hunt for a Champions League place was boosted by the Red Devils surprisingly losing at home to Fulham.

Erik ten Hag’s men are now eight points behind Villa after the defeat to the west London side and Luiz was very pleased to see them stumble at Old Trafford.

‘We’re really happy,’ the Brazilian midfielder told VillaTV. ‘It’s a big result for us, it’s great. The team could control the game after scoring the four goals and you need to keep going.

‘It’s a good result for us, Manchester United lost, it’s good for us too. We need to keep going.

‘I scored two goals, I’m really happy. I was feeling this before the game, I said to my girlfriend ‘today, I score, 100 per cent’ and I come to the pitch and score twice. I’m really happy for the performance of the team.’

It is back-to-back wins for Villa after being beaten at home by Manchester United, which seemed to be a big blow to their Champions League chances, but Emery is pleased with how they have recovered.

‘Today we showed our reaction like we did in Sheffield after we lost here against Newcastle,’ said the Spaniard.

‘We did it again in Fulham after we lost to Manchester United but we needed to confirm it here with our personality, playing like we played today.

‘We needed to feel comfortable here playing with our style and our idea. The supporters have to follow us and they have to be pushing us, they did it. It was fantastic, the day we spent here today with our supporters winning the match.’
