UK set for washout weekend as torrential rain hurtles towards most of the country

England and Wales are facing a weekend of flooding and heavy downpours, with yellow weather warnings in place through Britain across Saturday and Sunday.

Following a series of torrential showers which saw parts of the country receive a month’s worth of rain in under 24 hours, there are fears that a fresh round of floods could cause severe disruption throughout the UK.

According to the Met Office, already-waterlogged land is at risk of becoming swamped with floodwater, after an additional 40mm of rain is predicted to engulf parts of Britain later today.

Temperatures will be as high as 15C thanks to an unseasonably mild spell due to winds coming from the south.

And while the weather warning does not apply in Scotland or Northern Ireland, the western and northern-most parts of the UK will still see rain throughout the day.

Further downpours are also expected to drench parts of Britain overnight.

Forecaster Craig Snell said: ‘The ground is already a little bit more saturated across England and Wales compared to Scotland and Northern Ireland, so they’ll be a little more sensitive to the rainfall.

‘Some parts could see disruption, transport may be a little bit delayed and if you’re driving on the roads your journey may take a little bit longer due to spray and road closures.’

The warning, issued on Friday, runs from 3pm on Saturday until 6pm on Sunday. 

Across England, there are currently eight flood warnings and 101 flood alerts in place – the former meaning flooding is ‘likely’, the latter ‘possible’. There is one flood alert in south-west Wales.

The Met Office added: ‘Bus and train services are probably going to be affected with journey times taking longer. Spray and flooding on roads will probably make journey times longer

‘Flooding of a few homes and businesses is likely, [with] some interruption to power supplies and other services.’

The Environment Agency, which oversees weather patterns in England, said: ‘Land, roads and some properties will flood and there will be travel disruption.’

Natural Resources Wales added: ‘Local flooding from surface water is probable, and local flooding from rivers is also possible, on Saturday and Sunday across Wales.

‘Land, roads and some properties could flood and there could be travel disruption.’
