Wolves boss Gary O’Neil has confirmed that Matheus Cunha has sustained a ‘significant’ hamstring injury and is unable to give a timeframe for his potential return.
Cunha was withdrawn after just 20 minutes during Wolves’ 2-0 loss to Brentford on Saturday at Molineux.
The Brazilian has been in sparkling form this season, notching up nine Premier League goals so far this season including a hat-trick in his side’s 4-2 win against Chelsea earlier in February.
But scans earlier in the week revealed that the 24-year-old is set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines.
‘It’s a fairly significant injury to his hamstring,’ O’Neil told the club’s website on Wednesday.
‘There’s no timeline on it. I’ve spoken to Matheus a lot and he just wants to keep pushing to get back as soon as he can.
‘He’s started working on it already, so we’re just going to monitor it week by week, day by day, see how far he can come and how quickly we can get him back. He’s keen to get back out there as soon as possible.

‘It’s obviously a big blow to us, to the team and Matheus because of the work he’s been doing – the form he was in was exceptional. These things happen, every team suffers injuries.
‘Channy [Hwang Hee-Chan] was gone for over a month with the Asian Cup and we managed to keep ploughing on and we need to do the same without Matheus.’
Hwang returned to Wolves following South Korea’s 2-0 defeat to Jordan in the Asian Cup semi-final but missed the defeat to Brentford due to a calf niggle.

On the South Korean’s injury status, O’Neil said: ‘Channy should be fine, just some awareness in his calf. We would’ve thought he’d train part way through next week and hopefully be available for the weekend.’
Wolves travel to take on Tottenham on Saturday as they look to continue their impressive recent record against the north London side which has seen them lose just one of the last four encounters.
