Mason Greenwood has been handed a possible escape route of Manchester United at the end of the season, with Atletico Madrid lining up a move for the forward.

In January 2022, Greenwood was arrested on suspicion of rape, controlling behaviour and assault – charges which were later dropped. However, United’s hierarchy decided it was in everyone’s best interests for the 22-year-old to find a new club and recommence his career elsewhere.

Greenwood went on to join Getafe on a season-long loan deal back in September and the England international has scored seven goals in 22 appearances for the La Liga outfit in all competitions this season.

Despite criticism of the move in Spain and persistent jeers from rival supporters, Greenwood’s eye-catching performances for Getafe have put him on the radar of some of Europe’s elite clubs, with Juventus and Barcelona credited with an interest in recent months.

According to The Telegraph, Atletico Madrid are also firmly in the running for Greenwood’s signature after placing the youngster on their shortlist of attacking targets for the summer transfer window.

The report claims that Atleti were keen to bring in a forward before the January transfer deadline, to ease the pressure on Antoine Griezmann and Alvaro Morata, but their bid to land Juve’s Moise Kean collapsed at the medical stage.

While Greenwood is tied into a contract at Old Trafford until 2025, the Red Devils are prepared to cash in on their academy graduate – who has scored 35 goals in 129 games for his boyhood club – for a cut-price fee.

Greenwood has scored two goals in his last three league games for Getafe and earned rave reviews for his display in the side’s 3-3 draw with Atletico Madrid back in December.

Though Borja Mayoral and Oscar Rodriguez were the visitors’ goalscorers on the day, Griezmann said it was Greenwood’s influence that saw Atleti drop points at the Metropolitano Stadium.

‘Mason Greenwood was really causing us problems in the second half,’ the Atleti and France star told reporters after the game.

‘We couldn’t stop him and it cost us the game.’

Last week, Getafe’s 2-0 defeat to Real Madrid was overshadowed by an incident involving Greenwood and Jude Bellingham, in which the latter was accused of using an alleged slur towards his fellow countryman.

The Spanish FA have since been asked to investigate what exactly was said, while Getafe’s manager, Jose Bordalas, has called for ‘great guy’ Greenwood to be ‘respected’.

‘I know the same thing that you know. It’s not up to me, it’s the club, La Liga and the Federation that have to make an assessment about it,’ Bordalas told reporters at the weekend.

‘The only thing that I can say is that I ask for respect for Mason Greenwood because he is a great guy. He is a man who respects everyone and has exemplary behaviour.’
