Germany and Bayern Munich legend Franz Beckenbauer has died aged 78, his family has confirmed.
The iconic defender played for Bayern Munich from 1964-77, winning four Bundesliga titles and three European Cups.
He starred for the West Germany national team, winning the 1974 World Cup and finishing runner-up to England in 1966.
He was unquestionably one of the greatest players on the planet during his peak, winning the Ballon d’Or in 1972 and ’76.
Beckenbauer went on to manage West Germany to the 1990 World Cup in Italy, further cementing his legendary status in his nation.
‘It is with deep sadness that we announce that my husband and our father, Franz Beckenbauer, passed away peacefully in his sleep yesterday, Sunday, surrounded by his family,’ the family said.
‘We ask that you be able to grieve in silence and refrain from asking any questions.’
