Chelsea are considering entering the market for a new left-back as Dortmund close in on a move for Ian Maatsen.

The Blues accepted a bid from Burnley for Maatsen last summer, after the Clarets had the Dutchman on loan in the 2022/23 season.

However, Maatsen was keen to remain at Stamford Bridge to stake his claim for a starting spot.

However, Maatsen has been limited to just three starts this season and two of those came in the Carabao Cup.

During Maatsen’s 15 appearances in all competitions, he has mainly played on the flank and away from his preferred left-back position.

Chelsea are now minded to sell the Dutchman and his status as an academy product would greatly help the club’s ability to spend in the January window.

Though Dortmund would prefer a loan, the Telegraph say the two clubs are coming closer to agreeing a transfer fee and the Germans are confident of completing a deal.

Chelsea will then explore their options at left-back, with Ben Chilwell still sidelined through injury.

Marc Cucurella is also free to leave the club.
