‘He doesn’t understand the game’ – Peter Schmeichel urges Erik ten Hag to drop ‘frustrating’ Man Utd star

Former Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel has slammed Antony for ‘not having the instincts’ and ‘frustrating’ his teammates.

The Brazil international turned in another disappointing performance as United fell to a 2-1 defeat at Nottingham Forest on Saturday evening.

Antony has failed to register a single goal or assist in 21 appearances this season with his last assist for the club coming last May in a win over Wolves. His last goal for the club came at the City Ground last season in April.

Antony was benched midweek in the thrilling comeback victory over Aston Villa where Alejandro Garnacho starred on the right but Rasmus Hojlund’s absence forced a reshuffle in attack against Forest.

Erik ten Hag has for the most part kept faith in his former Ajax star with Schmeichel questioning that decision in the aftermath of Saturday’s defeat.

In his scathing criticism of Antony, the former goalkeeper also accused him of ‘not understanding the game’, urging ten Hag to rethink his role in the team.

‘He has had an opportunity for a long, long time. He hasn’t got the instincts, he hasn’t made an assist or scored, it is like he is not understanding the game,’ Schmeichel told Premier League Productions.

‘It is really difficult. We don’t know what the message is from the manager.

‘He might have been asked to do what he has been doing.

‘But then the manager is responsible for no assists, no goals going back to April for him to put a number down on anything that has value for the team.

‘The manager needs to rethink this position. He doesn’t give much to the team and he frustrates his teammates around him. It is so clear.’

Antony was replaced early in the second-half by Amad Diallo, making his first appearance of the season after a knee injury suffered in the summer.

The Ivory Coast international will hope to secure his first starting appearance of the season when United take on Wigan Athletic in the FA Cup third round next weekend.
