Arsenal are interested in a deal for Barcelona captain Sergi Roberto who is ‘highly valued’ by Gunners boss Mikel Arteta, according to reports.

Roberto can operate as a right-back or in central midfield and it is thought that he will make a decision on his future at the end of the current season.

The north Londoners, who rate his experience and versatility, have already asked Barcelona about Roberto’s availability, Spanish outlet Sport have reported.

It is believed that if Roberto decides to leave Barcelona, his preference would be to join a Premier League team and he is keen on the city of London.

Roberto came through Barcelona’s academy and has spent his entire senior career at the Catalan club, making 357 appearances to date.

The 31-year-old, capped 11 times by Spain, is out of contract in the summer but Barcelona have the option to extend his deal for a further year.

Meanwhile, Arsenal are preparing for the January transfer window, with Arteta admitting that his side are ‘really short’ in some areas.
