Liverpool are reportedly plotting a £30m move for Wolfsburg defender Maxence Lacroix in January to provide cover for injured star Joel Matip.

Jurgen Klopp’s side are set to be without centre-back Matip for the rest of the season after he picked up a knee injury in Sunday’s 4-3 victory over Fulham.

The 32-year-old, who is out of contract at the end of the season, had been in impressive form for the Reds and his long absence causes more problems for a Liverpool defence already without Andrew Robertson until the new year.

That has led Liverpool to search for replacements and according to The Sun, Klopp’s team have now identified Wolfsburg’s Lacroix as a possible option.

The 23-year-old Frenchman has impressed in the Bundesliga and it is thought that Liverpool would be able to snap him up for £30m.

Lacroix can operate as a centre-back or right-back and he has made 113 appearances for Wolfsburg to date after he joined from Sochaux in 2020.

It is believed that Liverpool are also considering a move for Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi.

Liverpool have enjoyed a strong start to the 2023-24 season, losing just one of their 15 Premier League games thus far and sit second behind leaders Arsenal.

The Reds return to action on Saturday with a trip to Selhurst Park to face Palace.
