Mikel Arteta will be ‘galvanised’ by David Raya decision despite Luton mistakes, insists Ian Wright

Mikel Arteta will stick by David Raya and will be ‘galvanised’ by his faith in the Spaniard despite his mistakes against Luton.

That’s according to Ian Wright, who says that Arsenal’s form means Arteta can afford to keep picking Raya.

The on-loan Brentford keeper made two mistakes in the Gunners’ 4-3 win against Luton on Tuesday night.

Raya joined on loan from the Bees last summer and is set to complete a £27m move to the Emirates in 2024.

He’s ousted Aaron Ramsdale as first choice, but his performances haven’t validated Arteta’s decision.

But Wright says that Raya’s mistakes will only strengthen Arteta’s belief in the goalkeeper.

‘It’s a tough question for him [Arteta] to answer and I totally understand the interviewer has to ask the question but you’ve got to remember he’s the one who brought this on the team and the club, bringing in a goalkeeper who he’s made his No.1,’ Wright told Premier League Productions.

‘So if that goalkeeper then makes a mistake and he gets asked about it he’s probably going to swerve the question. At the end of the day that will probably only galvanise him to continue to play him and have the faith in him.

‘But at the same time the main thing is Arsenal winning, the team winning and that’s all he’ll be thinking about now Mikel.’
