Joel Matip suffered a knee injury during Liverpool’s 4-3 win over Fulham on Sunday and Jurgen Klopp predicted ‘it won’t be a short one’ for the centre-back.

It was a dramatic afternoon at Anfield as Liverpool twice took the lead in the first half and were twice pegged back by the visitors.

The west London side then took a surprise lead 80 minutes in to stun Anfield, but the Reds roared back, with Wataru Endo equalising with three minutes to play and Trent Alexander-Arnold netting the winner a minute later.

The win kept Liverpool within two points of league-leaders Arsenal but there was some bad news, with Matip suffering a potentially serious knee injury.

‘We lost Joel today,’ said Klopp after the game. ‘No scan yet but it won’t be a short one. We have to get through this.’

The defender joins the likes of Alisson Becker, Andy Robertson, Diogo Jota and Thiago Alcantara on the injury list during a busy period for Liverpool domestically and in Europe.

Despite the frustrating news, Klopp was delighted with the win, saying: ‘Feeling after the game is exceptional. During the game, slightly different in moments

‘We changed system a couple of times and we worked out. That’s not always the case. Outstanding experience. I don’t think anyone before the game thought it would be a game you’d never forget. You’re welcome.

‘I never saw a game with so many worldies. Macca’s been doing it in training. Trent’s free-kick was unbelievable. Wataru was so important. He was really good. Then Trent makes it a brace. I didn’t actually see it go in.’

Alexander-Arnold, who saw the opener from his free-kick go down as a Bernd Leno own goal, added: ‘Ecstatic. Important game and important goal for the team. We needed to win. At 87 minutes it didn’t look likely at all but we dug deep and found a way. We did that last week and we’ve done it again today.

‘We knew there would be a lot of time added on and we knew there would be chances for us in the game.

‘The momentum from the crowd and the players was to push forward and get that winner.’
