Jermaine Jenas does not believe that Erik ten Hag is the right fit for Manchester United, claiming that the Dutchman’s poor transfer policy has landed him in trouble.

United enjoyed a promising first season under the former Ajax boss, finishing in the top four while also winning the Carabao Cup for the club’s first silverware since 2017.

However, this season his side have struggled, losing five of their opening twelve Premier League fixtures and currently bottom of their Champions League group.

The Red Devils scrapped past Luton Town with a narrow 1-0 win before the international break but still remain five points off the top four, with Jenas fearing that time is running out for the 53-year-old.

‘I don’t see players who have chucked the towel in, I just see players who don’t know what to do. There’s no cohesion,’ the pundit said on TalkSport.

‘I don’t think he’s good enough. I’ve not seen anything in his style of management that makes me think he’s the right man to take them in the right direction.

‘I can’t see what his plan is based on the players he is buying – that’s a big one for me. All he’s buying is what he knows rather than what is good for Manchester United.’

During his first summer window in charge, Ten Hag brought in Antony and Lisandro Martinez from his former club, Ajax.

Martinez has missed spells with injury but Antony – in particular – has struggled to impress in a United shirt, notching up just four league goals since his £82million move.

While Rasmus Hojlund has looked bright since his move from Atalanta, other big-money signings Mason Mount and Sofyan Amrabat have endured a stuttering start to live at Old Trafford.

While uncertainty persists at the boardroom level following the departure of Chief Executive Richard Arnold, Jenas still suggests that Ten Hag’s transfer record is worthy of critique and will ultimately cost him.

‘It’s very hard for people in managerial positions to manage that club when at the top of that three is chaos,’ he added.

‘But he has been given funds to spend and what he has spent that money on has not been good and I think that will be his downfall when it happens.’
