A British teenager has died following a fall from a hotel balcony in Lanzarote.

The 18-year-old was rushed to hospital yesterday morning suffering injuries which at the time were described as ‘very serious.’

Late last night it emerged he had died at the Doctor Jose Molina Orosa Hospital in the island capital Tenerife.

Police sources confirmed he was British and that an investigation is underway into the incident.

Initial reports have pointed to the death being an accident.

There has not yet been any official comment from the Civil Guard or the three-star Galeon Playa Apart-Hotel which has been named as the place where the unnamed tourist plunged from.

The tourist complex is in Costa Teguise. Its website describes it as being in one of the most beautiful spots in the resort on the east coast of the island, overlooking the water sports hub of Playa de Las Cucharas on one side and the charming sand beach of el Jablillo on the other.

It is not yet clear what height the young holidaymaker plunged from and whether he was in Lanzarote with friends and family.

Police are expected to make an official comment at some point today.
