Newcastle considering January move for Arsenal star Emile Smith Rowe

Newcastle are in the early stages of plotting a January move for Arsenal star Emile Smith Rowe.

The 23-year-old hardly featured last season during an injury-ravaged campaign which cost him a place in England’s World Cup squad.

Smith Rowe returned to full fitness over the summer and played a pivotal role in England’s European Under-21 Championship triumph.

The versatile midfielder arrived back in pre-season training hoping to force his way back into Mikel Arteta’s plans but opportunities have been in short supply.

Indeed, Smith Rowe’s only start so far this term came against Brentford in the Carabao Cup last month, while he was an unused substitute in Sunday’s landmark win over Manchester City.

Speaking after the 1-0 win against the Bees, Arteta warned the Arsenal No.10 was still working his way back to peak condition.

He said: ‘I think he had really good moments in the first half, and the game was much easier for him, the way he was developing with his qualities, and the game we started to play after five or ten minutes in the second half, and then after he was struggling more.

‘Physically, he’s still not there to play 90 minutes, we have to bear in mind that we have four or five players in that field and that was big concern for us today in the line-up, because we have seven at Colney that are not fit now.’

According to The Northern Echo, Newcastle have already held talks to map out their plan of action for the January window and Smith Rowe has emerged already as a potential target.

Newcastle have made a strong start to the season, both at home and abroad, and will be keen to add to their squad when the window reopens.

Arsenal are said to value the Hale End Academy graduate, who is also reported to be on West Ham’s radar, at around £50million.
