Raphael Varane has missed Manchester United’s meeting with Brentford on Saturday afternoon with a ‘minor issue’ but should be back next week, confirmed Red Devils manager Erik ten Hag.
The Frenchman has been plagued with injury problems since his move from Real Madrid and will not add to the four Premier League starts he has made so far this season this weekend.
Ten Hag did not go into detail on the problem the centre-back is dealing with, but did confirm that it is not serious.
‘He [Varane] couldn’t make the game, he had a minor issue,’ Ten Hag told Sky Sports. ‘If it was two or three days later he could have made it but now it was too short.’
Varane joins a string of United players who are sidelined, with Ten Hag’s squad especially depleted in defence.
Lisandro Martinez, Luke Shaw, Tyrell Malacia, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Sergio Reguilon are all out of action, leaving a patchwork back four against the Bees at Old Trafford.
Diogo Dalot, Harry Maguire, Jonny Evans and Victor Lindelof make up Ten Hag’s defence, with Sofyan Amrabat and Casemiro tasked with shielding them from midfield.
