David Beckham has paid a heartfelt tribute to Lady Cathy, the late wife of former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson who died on Friday, aged 84.
Cathy had been married to Sir Alex since 1966, with the couple having met while they were both working at a typewriter factory.
While the influence the most successful coach in United’s history had on Beckham’s career is well documented, the former England captain revealed he held Cathy in equally high esteem.
Speaking to Sky Sports while attending the Qatar Grand Prix, Beckham said: ‘Obviously my deepest sympathies go to the boss.
‘To have Cathy by his side for a long, long time for many, many years, to give him strength he needed through his life and his career, it’s a very sad time for him and his family and grandkids.
‘We send our love to him, but she was an incredible person. We looked up to the boss but we also looked up to Cathy. It’s a really sad time for him.’

Flags were at half mast on Saturday at Old Trafford as United hosted Brentford, less than 24 hours after the club confirmed Cathy’s death.
Players wore black armbands, while United also took the decision not to play music over the tannoy system during the warm-ups as a mark of respect.
Erik ten Hag’s side, ultimately, secured a victory worthy of Ferguson’s greatest teams, scoring twice in injury-time to secure a memorable comeback win over Brentford.
It was also fitting that McTominay, an academy graduate, was the man to come off the bench to seal a scarcely believable result that, for now at least, eases the pressure on Erik ten Hag.

‘That’s what the manager always says about the subs,’ said current captain Bruno Fernandes. ‘I think last year we were the team with the most goals coming from the bench and this has to be the mood for everyone coming off the bench.
‘I know it’s difficult to be on the bench, everyone wants to be playing, but Scott came on for 10 minutes and scored two goals.
‘It’s Fergie time at United, it’s quite normal to score at this time of the game and part of it being Fergie time, it has to be an academy player scoring too. Scott gave us the win today and we’re all really happy for him.’
