A bus has crashed off an elevated street near the Italian city of Venice, killing at least 20 people and injuring others, authorities said.
The crash happened in Mestre, a suburb of Venice.
Mayor of Venice Luigi Brugnaro posted on X, formerly known as Twitter: ‘A huge tragedy struck our community this evening.’
He added: ‘An apocalyptic scene. I am speechless.’

According to local media, the bus fell a few metres before crashing close to Mestre’s railway tracks, where it caught fire.
Emergency crews were on the scene.
Italian premier Giorgia Meloni expressed her ‘deepest sorrow’ after the crash.
The bus was said to be carrying tourists from Eastern Europe from Venice back to their hotel at Marghera just minutes away from the crash site.

It has since emerged many of those onboard were Ukrainians who were heading to a nearby campsite where they were staying.
Interior minister Matteo Piantedosi said: ‘The bus has fallen 30 metres and caught fire and what worsened the situation was that it was biomethane powered.’
Forty ambulances were sent to the scene following the crash and the Venice railway line was temporarily closed, although it has since reopened.
