Two people are still missing after a fire ripped through a nightclub and killed 13 people.

The nightclub in the southern Spanish city of Murcia went up in flames at around 6am on Sunday, before spreading to two others nearby.

A spokeman for Murcia town hall said the nightclub was operating without a permit, after denying two renewal permits last year, but representatives for the nightclub denied this on Spanish television.

Francisco Jimenez, the central government’s official for the region, previously said all the missing had been located and no more bodies had been found.

He later said there had been confusion in the figures for the missing.

Mr Jimenez said the dead included people from Spain, Colombia, Ecuador and Nicaragua.

It is not known how many people were in the club when the fire broke out. The blaze is the deadliest nightclub blaze in Spain since 43 people were killed in Zaragoza in 1990.

24 people were injured in the fire, but they were treated at the scene and none were taken to hospital.

The city council declared three days of mourning with flags flown at half-mast on public buildings.

A minute’s silence was held outside Murcia town hall at noon on Monday.
