Erik ten Hag says he ‘understands’ the boos from Manchester United fans that greeted his side at full-time following their defeat to Crystal Palace.

A superb strike from Joachim Andersen sealed a 1-0 win for Roy Hodgson’s side as United fell to their fourth defeat in seven Premier League games.

Boos rang out around Old Trafford as the final whistle confirmed their worst start to a Premier League season.

After beating Burnley last Saturday, United pieced together their first back-to-back wins of the season when they beat Palace in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday but Saturday’s defeat provided another setback for ten Hag and his side.

‘I understand,’ ten Hag said post-match when asked about the boos.

‘When you play Palace you have to win, with all respect. Of course that is a concern, we have to be more consistent, we need a row of wins.

‘I can give you reasons but you will explain as an excuse. There are no excuses.’

Marcus Rashford endured another frustrating afternoon having scored just one goal in eight appearances this term.

United’s top scorer with 30 last season, the England international has struggled to replicate that form with ten Hag believing he and his teammates must improve in the final third.

‘I think he knows he can do better than he’s doing now. I’m sure it’ll come,’ ten Hag said. ‘He works hard, he will finish and it will come. It’s not automatic.

‘As you’ve seen today, we were in the right positions and the decision-making was not good enough and we didn’t score.’

Ten Hag added: ‘It’s a bad start. We have to catch up and do better. This is not good enough. Of course, it’s frustrating for everyone, especially the fans.

‘It’s frustrating but for us, as well, the players and for me. We have to stay together, fight together and get better and make sure we get improvement.’
