Bruno Fernandes has launched a staunch defence of Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana after the summer signing from Inter blamed himself for last night’s defeat against Bayern Munich.
Erik ten Hag’s side slipped to a fourth defeat in five games with the 4-3 scoreline hardly doing justice to the dominance the Bundesliga giants enjoyed over the course of 90 eventful minutes.
United, as they did against Brighton last weekend, started brightly, but their early momentum was punctured by Leroy Sane’s opening goal in the 28th minute which came courtesy of a huge error from Onana, who took responsibility for the mistake after the game.
Although the former Manchester City winger’s effort from outside the box was struck with venom, the Cameroon international was badly at fault for allowing the ball to squirm through his hands and into the net.
United conceded again just four minutes later when they allowed Serge Gnabry the freedom of the penalty area, and from then on faced an almost impossible task to drag themselves back into the contest.

Onana, who has endured a difficult start to his United career, fronted up after the match and took responsibility for another setback, saying: ‘This is the life of a goalkeeper.’
‘It’s difficult. We started very good. After my mistake we lost control of the game. It’s a difficult situation for us, for me especially because I’m the one who let the team down.
‘We were very good on the ball, they didn’t create any chances, their first shot on target I made a mistake. It was the key point and the team went down because of that mistake. If we didn’t win today it was because of me.’

United captain Fernandes, however, sent a message of support to David de Gea’s successor and insists defeat was, and always is, a collective responsibility.
He said: ‘Andre’s a great goalkeeper. He will keep giving us a lot of points, a lot of saves.
‘He doesn’t have to take blame for anything, we have to take the blame as a team, we’re going to go through this moment together because we’re strong as a team.’
