‘Anything less than a 2-0 win’ over Manchester United will be ‘disappointing’ for Bayern Munich, says club legend Didi Hamann.

United travel to Bayern on Wednesday night for their opening Champions League match of the season.

The Bundesliga champions are heavily favoured to sweep aside the Premier League team, partly because of the home advantage but moreover because of their wildly contrasting starts to the 2023/24 campaign.

Bayern are unbeaten in the league so far, with three wins out of four leaving them second in the table and behind Bayer Leverkusen only on goal difference.

United meanwhile have won two and lost three of their opening five fixtures, leaving them 13th, with last Saturday’s 3-1 home defeat to Brighton giving Erik ten Hag a mountain of work to do.

This has all lead to much expectation that Bayern will batter their opposition and enact some sort of revenge on the club that famously beat them in the Champions League final of 1999.

Hamann stopped short of predicting that, but the former Bayern and Liverpool star confirms that expectations are high, telling NeueOnlineCasinos.io: ‘It’ll be interesting to see.

‘Man United may not be what they once were, but they’re still a massive club. I think it’ll be a tricky game for Bayern because they’ll be expected to win and anything less than a 2 or 3-nil win will be seen as disappointing.

‘That expectation can be on players’ minds, especially when your opponents are being presented as underdogs.’

Some have also billed the clash as a Harry Kane derby of sorts, with the two clubs heavily linked with the striker over the summer, with Bayern eventually signing him from Tottenham in a deal worth over £100m.

The England captain has scored four goals in his first four Bundesliga appearances, but Hamann has actually expressed some concern that the 30-year-old might not have been the best signing in the long run.

He added: ‘[Randal] Kolo Mauni has an age advantage as he’s only 24. [Victor] Osimhen is still in his 20s, too.

‘The one thing I’d say about Kane is that we don’t know what kind of player he’ll be at the end of his four-year deal. He’ll still score goals, I’m sure, but I’m not sure he’s the long-term solution Bayern were looking for.

‘We’ll have to see. From a transfer fee perspective, I think the other two strikers would have made more sense. They’d have more resale value, but that’s not the case for Kane.’
