Parents protest hike in fees, cost of books in Delta school, begs Gov Oborevwori to intervene

Parents and Guardians have protested the increase in fees and the cost of books for their children by the authorities of the College of Education Warri, COEWA Nursery & Primary School in Warri, Delta State.

The Parents/Guardians were joined by their children in the protest outside the school gate at the time of this report,

The parents claimed the increment in the prices of the books for the children is outrageous.

They threatened to withdraw their children from school if nothing was done by the Governor Sheriff Oborevwori-led Peoples Democratic Party, PDP government of Delta State.

One of the parents, Tonukarin Dabona in a chat with DAILY POST said the COEWA Nursery &Primary School increased the books of his wards from ₦29,500 to ₦52,000, alleging that the school made the books and payment compulsory for each child.

While noting that the parents gathered to protest the increment, Dabona said if the school’s authority does not revert the hike in the prices of books, parents will not allow their children to go back to school.

He appealed to the Governor Oborevwori to intervene in the matter.

Another parent, Mr. Preye Suowari who has three kids in school, told DAILY POST that parents are not happy with the increment.

“The reason why parents are gathered here is because they’re protesting the hike of fees and books of their kids by the Management of COEWA Nursery & Primary School.”

He noted that the books that are being sold at exorbitant prices by the school are not original from the factory. “They’re copies bound via photocopies for parents,” he said.

Suowari said the most annoying part of it is that the books are being sold at “outrageous” prices to parents.

He asked the Governor to mandate that parents are allowed to buy books for their children anywhere across the state and not from schools as is the case at the COEWA Nursery &Primary School.

Suowari said “Parents are crying. Parents are dying.”

Other parents who claimed to have paid the fees of their wards demanded that the authority of the institution refund their monies so they could take their children to private schools within Warri.

They threatened to drag the school to court if it fails to refund their monies to them.

Efforts to speak with the Provost of the College of Education, Warri, COEWA, Dr. Oyovwi was unsuccessful at the time of this report.
