Stranded Brits beg for help after severe flooding hits Greek island

British holidaymakers have been left stranded and begging for help after a Greek island was hit by severe flooding.

The island of Skiathos, east of the Greek mainland, has seen torrential rain leading to flash flooding this week.

Emergency services are warning people to stay indoors, with many holidaymakers left trapped inside hotels with no electricity and struggling to get in contact with the outside world, the MailOnline reports.

The island’s mayor has also requested to declare a state of emergency, local media reported.

The situation has been described as ‘horrendously scary’, and there have been no flights in and out of the island’s airport.

Jet2 said yesterday evening it had to cancel all five flights due to fly to the island on Tuesday and Wednesday, adding the situation was ‘completely outside our control’.

Horrific pictures and videos show the streets of Skiathos turned into rivers, as fast-moving water swept bins, tables and chairs, and cars away.

One British holidaymaker said he and his wife were due to fly home at 8pm on Wednesday, but their flight has been cancelled and they have received little information from TUI as to when they can get back to Manchester Airport.

They are currently stranded at their hotel with no power and ‘food is running low’.

Locals are also being accommodated for at the hotel after the floods destroyed their homes on the beach.

He said: ‘Food supplies are running out at the hotel. No more can be supplied because the road by our hotel has collapsed.

‘The rain has been heavy for around 36 hours. Our hotel is now homing local families who have lost theirs on the beach.’

Two women were rescued from a road after it became submerged in water.

Footage shared by locals shows fast moving water rushing through the town’s streets, where just days ago Brits were enjoying the end of their summer holidays.

Emma Taylor, who was visiting Skiathos to celebrate her daughter’s 22nd birthday, said fearful hotel staff asked guests to check out of their rooms if they were due to fly home.

They were then allowed to check back in again if their flights were cancelled, as many have been, she said.

She said: ‘This is a serious storm. Flooding in our hotel corridors, ceilings, power cuts, and we’re lucky as we’re up high at the Skiathos Palace, Koukounaries. Some guests have been asked to check out of their rooms.’

She added the whole experience has been ‘dramatic and stressful’ and that she and her family have been ‘trapped’ inside their hotel.

Tourists have also complained they are stranded at the island’s airport.

Dangerous sea conditions have forced ferries to and from the island to be halted, leaving many passengers unsure whether they will be able to catch their flights home over the next few days.
