The Committee Chairman on Works and Transport, Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Mr Otobong Bob has warned contractors handling jobs at various locations in the State against abandoning the projects or underutilizing the funds appropriated for the execution of such projects.
The Chairman, who gave the warning on Friday during the inauguration of the Committee at the Assembly complex, Uyo, lamented the spate of abandoned projects in the State.
He stressed that the committee would ensure that projects initiated by the present government and past administrations were executed and completed in accordance with specifications.
Bob, who is the Deputy House Leader and member representing Nsit Ubium State constituency, said the Committee was not out to witch-hunt any ministry or parastatal but to ensure that contractors were up and doing.
According to him, “As a committee, we will not tolerate in any way, where money is appropriated and the contractors fail to utilize the set funds for the project awarded by the state government.
“This is a very strong warning to any contractor working under the Ministry of Transport and Ministry of Works.”
He hinted that the committee would ensure full compliance with the local content law to make sure that Akwa Ibom citizens were adequately employed.
He also promised to work with the Ministry of Transport to “harmonize the transport sector laws of the State and enhance adequate revenue remittances from that sector.”
Akwa Ibom: Lawmaker warns contractors against project abandonment, underutilization of funds
