Jonny Evans says he is ‘delighted’ to sign a one-year deal at Manchester United and has loved working under Erik ten Hag.

The 35-year-old Northern Irishman impressed Ten Hag after returning to United on trial this summer with some stellar pre-season performances.

Evans was released by Leicester City at the end of last season following their shock relegation from the Premier League.

He came through United’s academy and made 198 appearances for the club between 2006 and 2015 before moving to West Brom and then Leicester, where he spent the last five years before making his return as a Red Devil.

After news of his one-year deal was confirmed on Friday, Evans said: ‘I am delighted to join Manchester United, a place which has always felt like home.

‘This club and the fans have shaped me as a player and as a person since I was 15 years old, and I am delighted to be back where it all began as part of this talented squad.

‘I’ve really enjoyed working under the manager and his coaching staff since the start of pre-season, and I’m looking forward to helping this group achieve success together at this fantastic football club.’

Erik ten Hag has previously hailed Evans for his influence on the club’s young players.

‘I think he [Evans] helped us, as you said, [with] younger players, but also for numbers here,’ the Dutchman said.

‘Jonny wants to stay fit, he still wants a career. I think he played a very good game against Lyon (in a friendly) and you could see how he was mentoring the younger players. I think he was pushing the younger players to a higher level and that can be really helpful.’
