But with Harry Maguire‘s expected £30million transfer to West Ham collapsing, United have been effectively blocked from making a bid amid Financial Fair Play limitations.

However, Erik ten Hag may be able to land 27-year-old for free, regardless of Maguire’s future at Old Trafford.

According to Sky Sports in Germany, Pavard has held talks with Bayern CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen.

The World Cup winner had been seen as unsaleable this summer.

Although, following talks between Pavard and Dreesen on Wednesday, the club are now willing to let him go for a minimum of £34m.

This is at least £12m above the price of Inter’s first bid of £22m.

United are yet to submit a bid but could land the defender for free if they are willing to wait 12 months.

It comes with Sky’s report adding Bayern chiefs are considering the possibility of losing him for free when his contract runs out in 2024.

Should Pavard arrive without a fee, it would allow United to retain Maguire in the squad should they wish.

However, the England stalwart could be set to drop to FIFTH in the United pecking order of centre backs with Jonny Evans expected to sign a contract.

Pavard joined Bayern from Stuttgart for a reported fee of £31.5m in 2019.

He has since appeared 163 times for the Bavarians, including in Harry Kane‘s debut against RB Leipzig – which they lost 3-0.

Pavard was named on the bench for their Bundesliga opener against Werder Bremen.
